IB Junior English: Cisneros Activity One--Salvador Late or Early

Download and read the attached story, "Salvador Late of Early", by Sandra Cisneros. Go through the story, underling with at least three different colored pencils or pens, any repeated images or motifs; select one specific color to represent each reoccurring image, concept, or motif. Remember that imagery and motifs can include repetitions of colors, specific adverb/adjective choices, literary devices, situations, or even sentence patterns. Once you have color marked the passage, in your English notebook, compose three paragraphs--one for each specific color-marked pattern--explaining what the selected images, patterns, and motifs add to the story.

Some questions to consider are listed below:

How do these images reinforce or illustrate a specific theme or specific content beyond the words themselves? Do the images and/or motifs help to convey a deeper truth? Do they lend themselves to a specific tone or mood? Do they enforce an element of irony or profoundness? Be sure to justify your response with solid writing and analysis. Perhaps you have stumbled upon ideas that go beyond the questions posed above—run with them.

  • Remember that a paragraph, in this class, is no less than seven sentences in length.
